Fein MultiMaster Top

Feinย invented the handheld oscillating multi-tool and released their MultiMaster back inย 1986. At the time they decided to focus entirely on creating products of theย highest quality possible. 23 years later they are retaining that attitude andย have the most robust, easily usable handheld oscillating multi-tool on theย market. The Fein MultiMaster Top FMM 250Qย system is quite simply the most well thoughtย out, ergonomic and feature-rich oscillating tool on the market, even thoughย Feinโ€™s competitors have had over a decade to drool and tool up their ownย products now that the patent has expired.

Comparing Available Models

Feinย actually has 4 corded models on the market and one 9.6V (800-mAh) cordlessย version. The different models are designated by the names โ€œBasicโ€, โ€œStartโ€, โ€œSelectโ€ and their high-end package, the โ€œTopโ€. All models except the โ€œStartโ€ system feature the FMM 250Q MultiMaster with the QuickIN tool-less accessory changing system. Since weโ€™re reviewing the โ€œTopโ€ corded model I thought a chart might be niceย to help you decide which one to purchase.

Essentially you can get the Fein MultiMaster FMM 250Qย solo with no accessories (called the โ€œBasicโ€ย kit) or you can get one of three kits that come with various levels ofย accessories. For review, we received the Top system that comes with just aboutย everything you could wish for (though Fein offers a whole lot more in terms ofย specialized accessories). Itโ€™s also the only kit that comes with the Dustex II dustย extraction device.

Fein MultiMaster Top Buildย Quality & Accessories

Weโ€™veย handled just about all of the multi-tools on the market and the Fein isย definitely the heaviest product on the market. They didnโ€™t, however, strap aย couple of lead weights to the inside of the housing โ€“ this tool is simply builtย like a tank. We liked the fiberglas-reinforced ABS plastic housing that coveredย up the majority of the tool. The rubber overmold surrounds the on/off switchย and provides a solid grip whether you are holding the tool straight or rotatedย 90 degrees. Unlike many of the other oscillating tools now on the market, theย Fein MultiMaster is definitely not a one-handed tool. Its ample weight makes itย a serious tool that does best when guided with both hands.

The thumb switch is easily activated,ย though it is a bit stiffer than much of the competition. Once activated, theย Feinโ€™s soft-start motor ramps up to speed, a feature that not only protects theย motor from premature wear, but also sounds really cool. These German engineersย really know how to make a nice tool. There is a magnesium die-cast gear housingย which is bolted to the body of the tool with four torx head screws. At the baseย of the Fein MultiMaster Top is the speed dial which offers a continuously-variable speedย control, allowing the toolโ€™s oscillation to vary from 12,000 to 21,000 OPM (oscillationsย per minute).

Cord length is something that is oftenย taken for granted, but the Fein provides one that is 16 feet long! This is theย longest cord of any of the multi-tools weโ€™ve tested. While on the jobsiteย youโ€™re sure to have an extension cord handy, itโ€™s likely that around the homeย you simply wonโ€™t need one.

Changing Accessories

Fein MultiMaster Top accessory change

Nowย we come to the real differentiatorย between Fein and the competition. We already know itโ€™s heavier and has a niceย soft-start motor. It has an extra-long power cord and the case is nicer thanย just about anything weโ€™ve seen. The QuickIN accessory changing system, however,ย is revolutionaryโ€ฆ and tool-less. Thatโ€™s correct; you simply flip over theย quick-clamping lever located on the top of the FMM 250Q multi-tool a full 180 degrees and youย can pull out the fastening element.

This is a one-piece bolt/washer system thatย clamps the accessory to the tool holder. It has ridges that are grabbed ontoย and secured into place by the action of the lever. Itโ€™s a rather nifty designย that makes changing accessories a snap โ€“ for those with some hand strength. Theย quick-clamping lever isnโ€™t as easy to activate as it is to re-secure, but youย do get the hang of it over time. It also lets you know that the tool is reallyย holding onto the accessory and wonโ€™t let go โ€“ even under excessive force.

Whenย placing a new accessory onto the tool holder, we noted that the fasteningย element can be snapped into place and will hold the blade or sanding pad quiteย securely โ€“ even before the quick-clamping lever is re-secured. This means youย donโ€™t have to be terribly dexterous to get a new accessory placed into theย tool. There is no reason to hold the blade in place, for example, while you areย flipping the lever back into place (that is, unless you plan on shaking theย tool in the process).

Accessories have an 8-star pattern andย thus can be adjusted in 45 degree increments. This is less precise than someย other tools weโ€™ve seen, but reduced angles also means a more solid grip on theย blade or scraper โ€“ a trade-off we can at least see the logic on. Theย MultiMaster Top system we had in for review came with an almost unbelievableย amount of accessories, which I think it is best to show visually:

The Profile Sanding Set is unique toย Fein and is a god-send to those working with wood siding, molding or furnitureย that has unique curves and edges. The system uses a single clamp and a seriesย of rubber inserts that form a unique shape. You simply wrap small pieces ofย sandpaper over the insert and secure it into the clamp. The clamp fits neatlyย into the tool holder and oscillates as youโ€™d expect, making quick work of evenย tough detail sanding jobs.

Testingย and Use

Fein MultiMaster Top FMM 250Q cutting

The Fein MultiMaster Top FMM 250Qย was a pleasure to use. It quickly became our go-to tool forย odd jobs that required an unusual cut, or for detail sanding work that neededย something smaller than an orbital sander. First up was a job that involvedย replacing an offset beam that held up the roof of a carport. We needed to cutย back on of the joists in order to allow a secondary piece to rest on theย support.

Using the Fein MultiMaster and the included Metal + Wood blade, weย made quick work of the โ€œoffendingโ€ 2ร—6. The Fein cut through theย piece of lumber like butter and, even though the work was overhead, it didnโ€™tย take long to secure an inch-and-three-quarter cutout that gave us the access weย needed. Of course, the Fein MultiMaster Cordless Kit AFMM 14 would make even quicker work of this type of task, but sometimes a corded tool is nice in that it offers all of the power with none of the run-time issues.

Fein MultiMaster Top wood flooring

Another job involved replacing a pieceย of old pine flooring to repair some holes that existed due to old termiteย damage. The Fein plunged quickly into the dense pine wood (which was over 80ย years old) and we were able to guide it accurately so as to not cut too far andย damage the surrounding wood. We were surprised at how much control this toolย offered us and it was a real pleasure to use. In terms of raw power, theย MultiMaster FMM 250Q multi-tool cuts quickly and easily through even some of the toughestย wood weโ€™ve ever come across. Anyone who has worked on older frame houses knowsย that the older wood found in the walls and floors will make quick work of cheapย blades and bits. The Fein was a consistent performer.

The Fein measured 95dB SPL on our meterย from 3 feet away. This is about 3dB above the other corded multi-tools weโ€™veย tested to date, but nothing that we would consider excessive. Since the toolย ramps up and down with its soft-start motor, the sound is actually quiteย unobtrusive on its own.

Conclusion

Now that cordlessย oscillating multi-toolsย are hitting the market it may seem like a difficult choice when selecting oneย of these tools for your use. The Fein really does sit squarely at the top ofย the pile, however. If you want the best youโ€™re going to want to pony up theย dough and get this tool. It can be found for at least $50 under the MSRP if youย shop around and it provides the best user experience in a corded model. Forย those who are more budget conscious or who donโ€™t intend to use their multi-toolย in a professional setting, there are other choices that will save you quite aย bit of money and deliver similar results.

Because the Fein has such excellentย build quality, lots of accessories, a unique tool-less clamping system and aย ton of other above-average features it is in the unique position to get bothย our top-rated performance rating and also score well in our value rating, evenย though itโ€™s not an inexpensive tool. Sometimes you really do get what you payย for. Of course, if youโ€™re a commercial user you can also check out Feinโ€™sย souped-up SuperCutย systemย or the Festool Vecturo OS 400 Multitool which is based on it which provides even more power and accessories for those who reallyย need the power.
