We first checked out the brushed Milwaukee M12 Rotary Hammer when it broke ground as a super-compact cordless solution for concrete drilling. They demoed it with their M12 Hammervac system that got some coverage in a Pro Tool Reviews Magazine print article (back when print was still cool). As Milwaukee expanded its M12 FUEL brushless tools have been expanded to include the new M12 Fuel 5/8โ SDS Plus Rotary Hammer (2416-22XC and 2416-20). This new tool has some impressive specs, such as 5/8โณ SDS Plus bit capacity, which puts it in proximity to some older 18V tools weโve used. As expected, the new M12 brushless rotary hammer gets its gains from a combination of the new motor technology and also the companyโs new 4.0XC RedLithium battery packs.

Since the M12 rotary hammer is only 10โ long and weighs just 3.9 lbs, we could really see it getting some serious use from MRO, electrical and plumbing contractors who find themselves in light-duty serial applications (drilling tons of holes all day long). It should have the run time to rival some larger 18V compact tools, but it shaves up to 2 pounds off the tool in the process. Any time I can carry around less weight and still get the job doneโIโm all ears!
While the new tool is clearly optimized for serial drilling of smaller-diameter holes, the new EP (Electro-Pneumatic) tool will let you up to 5/8โ holes in concrete and masonry when needed. The new tool lacks a chipping-only mode but will let you use it as either a drill or rotary hammer.
