Southwire Made in America Screwdrivers and Nut Drivers

Southwire is expanding their series of Made in America hand tools, moving from the pliers we initially saw and into drivers. The Southwire Made in America screwdrivers and nut drivers feature a little different design. We’ve been using them for a while and really like what we’re seeing and feeling so far.

Get a Grip

Aside from the variety of drivers available (15 in total – see below), the big deal is the handle design. It’s a rounded hexagonal shape that has some of the best ergonomics we’ve ever felt on hand tools like these.

You can get a comfortable grip in any position around the handle. However, the two positions that recess in slightly feel really natural and even more comfortable. Being on opposite sides, it’s easy to make half turns to stay on that grip as you drive.

Of course, you might not take that kind of time while you’re using, but those of you that are OCD might appreciate it.

Southwire puts their rubber overmold on in a way that it shouldn’t loosen and slide over time like some do. They also pop a tether hole in the back so you can work more effectively and safely at height.

Just One Thing…

If there’s a downside, it’s that these are not full-tang drivers. The shaft on Southwire Made in America screwdrivers and nut drivers only goes about halfway through. That’s not a deal-breaker. These aren’t demo drivers and most of us won’t put enough torque on them to cause a failure. If you’re tough on your drivers, though, be aware of the design.

Pricing

Expect to see prices run $7–$12 with a couple of comprehensive sets just under $50. Keep your eyes on Lowes.com or your local Lowe’s store for these to hit shelves in early September.
