Spyderco has another blade from legendary designer Steve Ackerman: the Spyderco Serrata FB32G. Classified as a utility cutting tool, Ackerman draws on his extensive knowledge of what a survival blade needs to be, gained from his experience in military service in Namibia and Angola.  At first glance, the Serrata looks very similar to a kitchen knife. Its ergonomic handle has a natural feel, allowing for multiple grip options. To quote Ackerman directly, “Hold a Serrata edge up, edge down, reverse grip, you name it, and it feels like it belongs.” This knife may be as neat as the Spyderco Paramilitary 2, which we also love.

Features and Build Quality

The Spyderco Serrata FB32G is made from cast 440C steel using a process that involves creating a wax model of the blade, which is then encased in a mold. When heated, the wax melts away, leaving a perfectly shaped cavity into which molten steel is poured. After heat treatment, grinding, and polishing, the new blade is ready to be set in the handle. The casting process leaves dendritic crystalline structure (think fern leaves) in the steel that acts as a microserration that increases the blade’s bite when cutting across a surface.

The Spyderco Serrata FB32G blade itself features a plain edge, full-flat grind, and full tang construction. The black G-10 handle is secured by stainless steel cutler’s bolts and designed to be contoured to fit the user’s hand, eliminating hot spots. As an additional safety measure, the heel of the blade is intentionally blunted. For carrying, the Serrata comes with a custom-molded Boltaron sheath featuring a snap-fit to secure the blade, while the G-Clip keeps it attached to a belt, clothing, or bag.
