Oregon has a long and esteemed history in the world of blades; 77 years, to be exact. In 1947, the companyโs founder, Joseph Cox, placed his first product on the market. The Cox Chipper Chain embodied the cutting edge in more ways than one. Duplicating the alternating action of the timber beetle larvaโs jaws, Coxโs design improved blade performance. Today, the brand is a go-to source of chainsaw accessories and maintenance solutions for Pros and DIYers alike. Iโm talking about gear like the Oregon Compact Universal Chainsaw Sharpener (310-120).
Indeed, the 310-120 impressed our staff enough to earn the โbest overallโ spot on our Best Chainsaw Sharpener Reviews list. So, if youโre in the market for a versatile and cost-effective tool to keep your chains in tip-top shape, this model might suit you.

Oregon Compact Chainsaw Sharpener Performance and Design

Driving this unit is a 120V motor with one-way rotation. The 310-120 is one of four models in Oregonโs bench grinder lineup, which has a solid and well-deserved reputation. Iโve taken a look at the 410-120, as well, and it, too, made our Best Sharpener roster.
In terms of power and durability, the 310-120 is the fleetโs light-duty grinder, but donโt let that fool you. This thing has a lot going for it.
For example, as its name implies, Oregon made this chainsaw sharpener compact, yet versatile. Specifically, it features a universal design that allows it to sharpen chains up to .404-inch pitch, making it a great option for most home workshops.
Specs
- Model: Oregon 310-120
- Motor: 120V (85W)
- Mount type: Bench
- Sharpens chains up to 404-inch pitch

However, the 310-120 doesnโt have a clamping system. Instead, youโll have to use two bolts to install and remove it. Now, thatโs not unusual for benchtop grinders. Nonetheless, this compact chainsaw sharpener will have a leg up on the competition if Oregon goes with a clamp design in future iterations.
I also think youโll appreciate that this tool is comparatively easy to use. The operator simply places the chain in the guide and clamps it in place. Then, you adjust the base to the correct angle and the cut to the right depth, and youโre off to the races.
