Best Angle Grinders For Metal, Concrete, Wood, and More

When we set out to determine the best angle grinder, it didnโ€™t seem like a terribly difficult task. However, when we got our team together, it was quickly apparent that there are so many outstanding models out there. Unlike tools such as cordless drills or impact drivers, both cordless and corded angle grinders are highly relevant.

Weโ€™ve done our best to narrow down our top recommendations based on the performance, features, and even price of these tools. However, this isnโ€™t an exhaustive list of everything available. If you see a brand you like on our list, but not the exact grinder you need, take a closer look at their lineup, and you might find exactly what youโ€™re looking for.

Best Cordless Angle Grinders

Hilti Nuron 22V Cordless 6-Inch Angle Grinder AG 6D-22

  • Best for professional use
  • 6-inch configuration
  • 8500 Max RPM
  • 4.4 pounds (tool only)
  • Available in a 5-inch configuration
  • Price: Starting at $409

Highlighted Features

  • 3D ATC: Advanced kickback control senses kickback in any direction
  • SensTech: Detects when your hand leaves the handle and automatically stops the motor
  • Restart Protection: Requires you to cycle the switch if SensTech stops the motor
  • Electric Brake: Quickly stops the wheel when you turn the grinder off

Pros

  • Excellent performance
  • Innovative advanced safety features
  • Combines the convenience of a slide switch and the safety of a paddle switch
  • Lightweight for its class

Cons

  • More expensive than other grinders in the same class
  • Tool required for wheel changes

Why We Picked It

The Hilti AG 6D-22โ€™s performance is excellent, with a brushless motor keeping the RPMs high even under heavy pressure.

Two innovations really set it apart from the crowd, though. 360ยฐ Active Torque Control senses if the grinder makes a sudden move in any direction and automatically shuts off.

Then thereโ€™s SensTech. Sensors in the handle can detect when your hand is on the tool, even when youโ€™re wearing gloves. When your hand leaves, the motor shuts down. Itโ€™s the only grinder weโ€™ve seen to effectively offer the convenience of slide switch activation with the safety of a paddle switch in one tool.

Between the performance, features, and ergonomic design, the Hilti Nuron AG 6D-22 is the most impressive angle grinder weโ€™ve ever used.

Should You Buy It?

We love Hiltiโ€™s AG 6D-22 because of its blend of excellent performance and the best safety features weโ€™ve ever seen on an angle grinder. You can find similar performance from other brands with a lower price tag, but not the 360ยฐ Active Torque Control or SensTech. If safety is a high priority for you, this is as good as it gets.

Especially for smaller operations, this model may be more advanced than your budget allows for. Hiltiโ€™s a la carte business model tends to be favored by mid to large-sized construction firms.

Best Cordless Small Angle Grinder: Makita 40V max XGT GAG11

Makita 40V max XGT GAG11

  • Best for professional use
  • 5-inch configuration
  • 3000 โ€“ย 8500 RPM
  • Slide switch
  • 5.6 pounds (tool only)
  • Price: $319 bare, $554 kit

Highlighted Features

  • X-Lock Interface: Easy, fast, and tool-free wheel changes
  • Kickback Control: Active Feedback-sensing Technology stops the motor in the event of a wheel bind-up
  • Autostart Wireless System-Ready: Automatically activate your AWS-compatible dust extractor when you add the AWS chip
  • Electric Brake: Quickly stops the wheel when you turn the grinder off
  • Restart Protection: Prevent startup if the grinder is switch is activated when you install the battery
  • Soft Start: Smoothly accelerates the wheel and avoids jumpy start ups

Pros

  • Outstanding power output
  • Full suite of safety features
  • Tool-free wheel changes
  • Vibration-dampening side handle

Cons

  • Heavy for this class
  • Expensive

Why We Picked It

Among several quality small angle grinders, choosing the best came down to DeWaltโ€™s 20V Max XR DCG410 and Makitaโ€™s 40V max XGT GAG11. The two have quite a bit in common with high power output, a full suite of safety features, and wireless vacuum controls.

Makitaโ€™s edge is partly due to its use of an X-Lock wheel interface. With it, you simply flip the release lever on top of the tool to remove the wheel and press the new one in before locking the lever back down. Thereโ€™s no reason to ever reach for a spanner wrench or other tools.

There are a couple of downsides, though. Makitaโ€™s design is heavier, and if you want the AWS vac controls, youโ€™ll need to buy the AWS chip separately. However, youโ€™re unlikely to find a more feature-rich and well-built model in the cordless small angle grinder class than the GAG11.

Should You Buy It?

Makita went all in with the design of this model, so if youโ€™re willing to pay a premium to get the most convenient small angle grinder experience, the GAG11 nails it. It gets even better if youโ€™re tuckpointing or surface grinding concrete and add the AWS chip to assist with dust collection.

However, if your needs are primarily basic cutting and grinding, this model offers more than you really need.

Best Cordless 6-inch Angle Grinder: Milwaukee M18 Fuel 3676

Milwaukee M18 Fuel 3676

  • Best for professional use
  • 6-inch configuration
  • 3000 โ€“ย 9000 RPM
  • Dual Switch (Paddle and Side Handle)
  • 6.6 pounds (tool only)
  • Price: $429 bare, $598 kit

Highlighted Features

  • Dual Trigger Design: Improve safety by requiring two hands to operate
  • Rotating Side Handle: Locks into 15 different positions for a more customized grip
  • Kickback Control: Electronic clutch stops the wheel in the event of a bind-up
  • Electric Brake: Quickly stops the wheel when you turn the grinder off
  • Restart Protection: Prevent startup if the grinder is switch is activated when you install the battery
  • One-Key Enabled: Connect to the One-Key app for diagnostic and management tools

Pros

  • Excellent power output
  • Full suite of safety features
  • Vibration-dampening, rotating side handle
  • One-Key enabled

Cons

  • Tool required for wheel changes

Why We Picked It

The cordless medium angle grinder class is ridiculously competitive, with six brands making the final cut. Theyโ€™re so close to one another that choosing the best among them boils down to which bonus features you want. If anything, I can guarantee that thereโ€™s going to be a lot of disagreement in how this shakes out. However, for the way I prefer to work, the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 3676 is my top choice.

Itโ€™s very similar in performance to the 3672 that earned the top placement last year. It also features the kickback control, electric brake, and restart protection that model has. However, thereโ€™s a new upgrade that takes the safety and versatility to the next level.

This is a dual trigger model. To operate, you have to have one hand on the paddle switch and the other on the side handle.

To maintain the required connection, the side handle doesnโ€™t come off. Instead, it rotates to 15 different positions. Most grinders only have two, and some have a third on top. But 15 positions? Thatโ€™s a super-handy bonus stemming from the additional safety of a dual trigger design.

The downside is that this is an expensive model, and if you want the kit, itโ€™s currently configured with a 5.0Ah battery. Thatโ€™ll get the job done well, but you may want to pair it with a Forge battery to get the best overall performance.

Should You Buy It?

If youโ€™re looking for a high-performance angle grinder with premium safety features, Milwaukeeโ€™s 3676 is a great choice. One-Key is a bonus if youโ€™re pursuing tech-based inventory management.

Since most of the features are applicable no matter what size business you run or applications you specialize in, there arenโ€™t many scenarios where this model is the wrong call. However, if the dual trigger design isnโ€™t your cup of tea, the M18 Fuel 3672 is an excellent alternative.

Best Cordless Large Angle Grinder (7-Inch to 9-Inch): DeWalt 60V Max DCG460

DeWalt 60V Max DCG460

  • Best for professional use
  • 9-inch configuration
  • 9000 RPM
  • 16.5 pounds (tool only)
  • Price: $419 bare, $619 kit

Highlighted Features

  • Kickback Control: Stops the motor in the event of a wheel bind-up
  • E-Clutch: Stalls the motor when the load gets too high
  • Wireless Tool Control: Automatically activates WTC-enabled vacuums when connected
  • Electric Brake: Quickly stops the wheel when you turn the grinder off
  • Restart Protection: Prevent startup if the grinder is switch is activated when you install the battery
  • Soft Start: Smoothly accelerates the wheel and avoids jumpy start ups
  • Tool Connect Chip Ready: Add the Tool Connect Chip to access diagnostic and management features

Pros

  • Incredible power output
  • Full suite of safety features
  • Protective hand guard handle design

Cons

  • Heavy for this class
  • Single speed
  • Tool required for wheel changes

Why We Picked It

Not many brands throw their hats into the ring in the cordless large angle grinder class. Among the major brands, your options are between DeWalt, Makita, Metabo, and Milwaukee. None of them are poor choices. However, my pick for the best cordless large angle grinder is DeWaltโ€™s DCG460.

This is DeWaltโ€™s second-generation cordless 9-inch grinder, and it has several key upgrades. The biggest is how much power it hasโ€”3000 max watts out. Thatโ€™s significantly higher than the 2300 watts of the previous version.

DeWalt also supercharged the speed all the way to 9000 RPM. Considering most models in this class are around 6500 RPM, youโ€™re looking at much faster material removal and cutting.

The other big upgrade is Wireless Tool Control. Paired with a WTC-enabled vacuum, it automatically turns the vac on and off, which helps manage the battery and reduces unnecessary noise.

There are a couple of downsides, though. For one, this is a heavy grinder, even for the large class. For comparison, Milwaukeeโ€™s 2783 competitor is about four and a half pounds lighter. Thatโ€™s the price you pay for such high performance.

The other thing to keep in mind is that this is a single-speed grinder. While the high speed is great for working fast, you donโ€™t have the ability to dial it down if you need to.

Should You Buy It?

Grab the DCG460 if youโ€™re after the highest-performing cordless 9-inch angle grinder available. In addition to its fast removal speed, the wireless vac control is great for concrete surfacing and other masonry applications.

If youโ€™re worried about weight, this isnโ€™t the grinder for you, though. The same goes if you prefer to have control over the speed to adjust for different applications.

Best Cordless Angle Grinder for the Money: Ryobi PBLAG02

Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless PBLAG02

  • Best for serious DIY or occasional professional use
  • 4 1/2-inch configuration
  • 9200 RPM
  • 4.1 pounds (tool only)
  • Price: $119 bare, $164 kit

Highlighted Features

  • Angled Foot: Improves access for cutting and grinding flush or in tight areas

Pros

  • 3-position side handle
  • Lightweight
  • Excellent value

Cons

  • Single speed
  • Tool required for wheel changes

Why We Picked It

Ryobi made a huge jump in performance with its HP Brushless line of cordless tools, and the second-generation angle grinder of the group is no exception. Paired with a High Performance battery, the brushless motor is capable of 9200 RPM using 4 1/2-inch wheels.

One noticeable change is the angle of the toolโ€™s handle. By kicking the foot up, the base of the battery is higher than the wheel, making for easier flush cutting and accessing tight areas.

Thereโ€™s one change that some people might see as a downgrade, though. The previous version included a tool-free flange nut, while this model returns to a traditional design that requires a spanner wrench.

Should You Buy It?

This is a solid pick for serious DIYers, handymen, or other occasional-use Pros. It does its best work on basic cutting and grinding applications, but it isnโ€™t a great pick for the extended use or high-load jobs premium brands are often called on to tackle.

Best Corded Angler Grinders

In order to get the kickback control and electronic brake weโ€™ve been talking about with cordless grinders, the best way to bring them over to corded models is with the electronic controls that a brushless motor requires. In recent years, a couple of brands have introduced corded brushless angle grinders that offer those additional safety features.

Thatโ€™s a big deal to our team, plus you donโ€™t have carbon brushes to replace. If those features arenโ€™t a big deal to you, you can skip the brushless motor and save a little money.

Best 4 1/2 to 5-inch Small Angle Grinder: Metabo HPT AC Brushless G13VE2

Metabo HPT AC Brushless G13VE2

  • Best for professional use
  • 5-inch configuration
  • 2500 โ€“ 8500 RPM
  • 3.8 pounds
  • Price: $209

Highlighted Features

  • AC Brushless Motor: More efficient performance, lower maintenance, and lower weight
  • Kickback Control: Stops the motor in the event of a wheel bind-up
  • Electric Brake: Quickly stops the wheel when you turn the grinder off
  • Restart Protection: Prevent startup if the grinder is switch is activated when you install the battery
  • Soft Start: Smoothly accelerates the wheel and avoids jumpy start ups

Pros

  • AC brushless motor
  • High torque performance
  • Full suite of safety features
  • Vibration-dampening side handle
  • 3-position side handle
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • More expensive than brushed models
  • Tool required for wheel changes

Why We Picked It

In selecting the best small angle grinder, I passed over many quality models. As I narrowed down the options, it boiled down to a debate between brushless models from DeWalt and Metabo HPT. In the end, itโ€™s Metabo HPTโ€™s G13VE2 that emerged as the winner.

While the top speed may seem low, itโ€™s tuned for higher torque and has a wide speed range to dial in. When youโ€™re grinding down welds, cutting thick stock, and tackling other tough tasks, youโ€™ll notice the difference.

I also like that the weight of this model is relatively low and the slim handle offers a more comfortable grip.

What seals the deal is the price tag. Metabo HPTโ€™s corded grinders consistently have a lower price than comparable models from DeWalt, and that trend holds in this class.

Should You Buy It?

Grab this one if youโ€™re looking for a small angle grinder with advanced safety features and the unlimited runtime of a corded AC power source. Its higher torque makes it a great choice for fabrication jobs that require cutting thick metal and grinding down welds.

Best 6-inch Angle Grinder: Metabo WEPBA 19-150 Q DS M-Brush

  • Lanyard hook

Cons

  • Single speed

*** Note: In late 2025, Metabo announced that it would be brought fully under the Metabo HPT brand name. As the transition happens, you may find this model in stock with either name.***

Why We Picked It

For the best medium-size grinder, DeWaltโ€™s brushless DWE43244N and Metaboโ€™s WEPBA 19-150 Q DS M-Brush are the two that rise above the rest for me, with Metabo edging out DeWalt for the win.

Even though itโ€™s not brushless (and doesnโ€™t have the advanced electronic features that come with it), Metabo turns to its M-Brush technology that offers much longer carbon brush life and the impressive performance of a 14.5-amp motor.

From there, itโ€™s as full-featured as you can hope for, including a tether-ready carabiner for working at height. Plus, Metaboโ€™s auto-balancer design does a great job of reducing vibration and extending the life of the grinder and your accessories.

Should You Buy It?

If you donโ€™t need the advanced safety features and maintenance convenience of a brushless motor, the performance, durability, and reliability of the WEPBA 19-150 Q DS M-Brush make it a joy to use.

However, if brushless motor benefits are what youโ€™re after, DeWaltโ€™s DWE43244N is your best bet.

Best 7 to 9-inch Large Angle Grinder: Metabo WEPB 24-230 MVT

Metabo WEPB 24-230 MVT

  • Best for professional use
  • 9-inch configuration
  • 6600 RPM
  • 13.2 pounds
  • Price: $408

Highlighted Features

  • Electronic Safety Clutch: Minimizes kickback during a bind-up
  • Mechanical Disc Brake: Quickly stops the wheel when you turn the grinder off
  • Restart Protection: Prevent startup if the grinder is switch is activated when you install the battery
  • Soft Start: Smoothly accelerates the wheel and avoids jumpy start ups

Pros

  • Outstanding power
  • Vibration-dampening side handle
  • Comfortable rat tail ergonomics
  • 3-position side handle
  • Rotating main handle

Cons

  • Brushed motor
  • Single speed
  • Expensive

*** Note: In late 2025, Metabo announced that it would be brought fully under the Metabo HPT brand name. As the transition happens, you may find this model in stock with either name.***

Why We Picked It

When itโ€™s time to go big, Metaboโ€™s WEPB 24-230 MVT is my pick for the best large angle grinder. This is a class that has a lot of power, but can be short on features, but Metabo packs more inside the housing than most others.

Metaboโ€™s key features are all about safety. Youโ€™d think that with grinders this powerful, every model would have a brake, clutch, and soft start at the very least. However, theyโ€™re not as common among corded models as they are on battery-powered ones.

I also really like the rat tail handle design. Grinders of all sizes can have pretty wide handles that small and medium-size hands have a tougher time with. Metaboโ€™s rat tail handle offers a much more ergonomic grip to hands of all sizes.

Should You Buy It?

In the 9-inch class, thereโ€™s so much power that itโ€™s not worth taking a risk by skimping on safety features. Thatโ€™s what sets the WEPB 24-230 MVT apart and why I think itโ€™s a no-brainer if youโ€™re looking for a corded 9-inch angle grinder for handheld cutting and grinding. Itโ€™s expensive, sure, but jobsite injuries and downtime can be more costly.

Thatโ€™s not to say models from other reputable brands are inherently unsafe. Plus, there are other applications, like concrete surfacing, that may have you connect that grinder to an attachment that makes it easier and safer to use. In those cases, something with few features and a lower price tag may be a better fit for you.

Ridgid R1006

  • Best for serious DIYer and occasional professional use
  • 4 1/2-inch configuration
  • 11,000 RPM
  • 5.8 pounds
  • Price: $60

Highlighted Features

  • Safety Clutch: Minimizes kickback during a bind-up

Pros

  • Better performance than other models at this price point
  • Excellent value
  • Lifetime Service Agreement with registration

Cons

  • A bit heavier than other small angle grinders
  • Single speed

Why We Picked It

As my top pick for the best angle grinder for the money, Ridgid takes your basic grinder needs up a notch with its R1006. The big difference youโ€™ll notice between this and other models in a similar price range is that Ridgidโ€™s 8-amp motor is stronger.

Itโ€™s not a runaway, though, and there are a couple of other options that can match the performance. However, Ridgid offers a lifetime service agreement when you register your purchase, pushing the value score higher.

Should You Buy It?

Obviously, this grinder isnโ€™t as powerful or as feature-rich as the more expensive ones on our list, so be sure to count the cost of what youโ€™re giving up to get such a great value.

For those of you who primarily tackle basic cutting and grinding, $60 is hard to pass up, especially when itโ€™s backed by a Lifetime Service Agreement and conveniently available through your local Home Depot. I checked my closest stores, and they donโ€™t carry this one in-store, so be sure to give yourself enough time for shipping to the store or your shop.

Best Angle Grinder Brand

Metabo

Best Angle Grinder Brand

You can ask professionals which brand makes the best angle grinder and youโ€™ll get a variety of answers. When we look at the grinders consistently doing the toughest jobs, no brand shows up as much as Metabo.

The quality of Metaboโ€™s engineering and design, along with an incredibly deep line that covers the entire range of grinder needs, makes it a top choice time after time. Theyโ€™re more expensive than many professional brands, but thatโ€™s what we expect at this level.

In late 2025, the Metabo brand was brought fully under the Metabo HPT name. Weโ€™re waiting to see exactly how that rebranding affects Metabo, its angle grinders, and its model numbering system. Metabo HPT (formerly Hitachi power tools) makes excellent corded and cordless models, but Metaboโ€™s German-engineered designs have always been a step up. Itโ€™s those original Metabo grinders we prefer.

More Angle Grinder Priorities

If youโ€™re going to cut tile, granite, or other masonry with your angle grinder, you need to use a dust shroud and connect a dust extractor. A collection system keeps the dust from getting into your lungs while also pulling it away from your cutline. Plus, that debris can cause havoc on a grinder thatโ€™s not set up well enough to deal with it.

There are several add-on shrouds you can buy that take the place of the grinderโ€™s guard, but a ready-to-grind package is the way to go. Our top recommendation is Metaboโ€™s T 13-125 CED Diamond Cutting System.

Specifically designed to work with diamond cutting wheels, the power plant is a 12-amp/9600 RPM 5-inch grinder. Its wheeled shroud glides easily over surfaces (they can be removed for freehand cuts) and itโ€™s rail compatible for long, straight cuts. The set comes with Metaboโ€™s excellent cutting shroud, which is removable if you want to use the grinder for traditional tasks.

Price: $519

Makita 5-inch Concrete Planer PC5010CX1

The best angle grinder for concrete surface grinding has plenty of muscle behind it and a shroud to help collect the dust. For these tasks, we prefer the unlimited runtime of corded AC power.

Check out Makitaโ€™s PC5010CX1 for a 5-inch grinder with a concrete shroud as an all-in-one tool. Its 12-amp motor has 1400 watts of muscle and thereโ€™s a vibration-dampening spring system to make the job less fatiguing.

If youโ€™re on the hunt for the absolute best in concrete cutting and polishing on an industrial level, take a look at what US Saws has to offer. The Mark III Dust Buggy is ideal for cleaning out joints. For floor prep, the TC-7 Stand-Up Edger lets you tackle the edges close the walls where your larger concrete polisher isnโ€™t the best option. Incidentally, both use Metabo grinders to get the job done.

Price: $419

Most people donโ€™t think of an angle grinder for wood carving duties, but there are accessories out there specifically for that purpose. One of the most helpful is essentially a wheel with chainsaw teeth on the edge. You can also use flap disks just like you do for metal, and there are several other types.

Most of the wood carving wheels are 4 or 4 1/2 inches, so a small angle grinder is your best bet, and we highly recommend a model with kickback control. The trick here is to make sure your grinder isnโ€™t underpowered since this can be a very aggressive application.

If you have spare batteries and a rapid charger, cordless can be a convenient option. However, the unlimited runtime of a corded grinder is our preference.

If you donโ€™t already have a grinder in mind, give Metabo HPTโ€™s G13BYEQ a shot as our pick for the best corded small angle grinder.

Diablo X-Lock Diamond Wheels

The best angle grinder for cutting metal combines high edge speed with high torque to give you efficient, confident cutting. Once you have that, itโ€™s all about the type of metal youโ€™re cutting and choosing the right accessory for the job. After all, cutting 16-gauge sheet metal is a very different job than cutting cast iron pipe.

You have two major accessory options: abrasive wheels or diamond wheels. Abrasive wheels are significantly cheaper, while diamond wheels last much, much longer. If you do a cost-per-cut analysis, diamond wheels end up being a better value if you can manage the upfront cost.

If you prefer abrasive cutting wheels, we like the performance and life we get from Makitaโ€™s, and they have both standard and X-Lock wheels available. Another one to keep your eyes on is DeWaltโ€™s Elite Series.

For diamond cutting wheels, itโ€™s tough to beat Diablo for both standard and X-Lock arbors. We also use Lenox MetalMax diamond cutting wheels frequently.

What to Look for When Youโ€™re Shopping for an Angle Grinder

Choosing the right angle grinder for the job is mainly about size and performance. With small and large being the primary angle grinder classes (we like to separate the 6-inch class from the 4 1/2 โ€“ย 5-inch, even though theyโ€™re both technically small), itโ€™s all about which size wheel fits in the area you need to grind, cut, or polish.

When the wheel contacts the material, it then has to get the job done. An underpowered grinder might cut 1/4-inch steel plate or grind welds, but higher-performing ones are going to do it much more quickly.

From there, itโ€™s about convenience and features. By far the most convenient way to go is to cut the cord and use battery power. The best cordless angle grinders keep up with corded modelsโ€”even up to 9-inch models! The trade-off is a higher cost and limited runtime. On the other hand, electronic controls give cordless grinders some features that arenโ€™t common on corded ones.

Here are some features to consider:

  • Electronic braking
  • Automatic kickback shut-off
  • Advanced vibration control system
  • Compatible shrouds for working with concrete/masonry
  • Brushless motor (on cordless and corded models)
  • Smart controls/tracking
  • Three total side handle install points

How We Make Our Choices

As we considered the dozens of quality grinders available, there were several things we prioritized to help us make our recommendations.

Performance

At the end of the day, performance is still the number one priority. Weโ€™re looking for grinders that have enough torque to keep their RPMs high and continue to work quickly when the going gets tough.

Size and Weight

When itโ€™s an option, our team reaches for the lightest, most compact tool that still gets the job done with confidence and has the durability to thrive on jobsites.

Safety Features

Braking grinders with kickback control are two of the top safety features we look for. Any other innovations that improve safety also earn big bonus points.

Additional Features

After safety features, other design elements that make the job easier help improve a grinderโ€™s overall score.

Price and Value

Weโ€™re big on value. Itโ€™s not about paying the least amount of money possibleโ€”itโ€™s about getting the most you can from the angle grinder that fits the budget you have.

The best cutting discs per dollar are the Pferd ultra thin cut off wheels, they are stamped rather than moulded, which means they are less likely to shatter, and also thinner for a faster cut.
